Colonel Sands and Commander Smith report that Xarmid resistance collapsed with the departure of the last aliens from the bridge. The Xarmids seemed to lose their ability to communicate and became unable to act in concert. Within 30 minutes all were tracked down and destroyed as they milled about aimlessly. The two teams suffered eight total casualties during the battle, including 3 KIA and 1 destroyed robot.
- Killed in Action
- Wounded in Action (mortal but for technology, out of action 1-2 months)
Maggie, the young pure strain human rescued from the Shadow Years cryosleep bunker over a year ago, was also killed. Barnard, Cheng and Maggie tried to capture a Xarmid scout-craft found inside one of the four Daedalus shuttle bays. Unfortunately the Xarmids were prepared with an ambush and also left a pilot inside the Shuttle.
Star Mother was forced to destroy this and most of the other Xarmid craft that tried to make a break for it when the bridge was abandoned. Perhaps 2-3 Xarmid small craft escaped from the Daedalus. Did they head back to earth? The main Sreelathan moon-base is a new crater on the dark side of the moon, ironically destroyed by one of the terrible ‘Omega’ weapons originally put into the hands of human degenerates ~140 years ago. The Xarmid laboratories at Moon-base Ariadne are uninhabitable due to the rampaging presence of a certain demented defense borg. A significant number of Xarmids working to round up troublemakers in the recent purge operations must still be stranded on earth. A few may even still be trying to root out rebels beneath New Salt City, unaware they’ve been abandoned by their masters. What of the few Xarmids operating the three largely automated ‘Planetary Core Drill’ facilities in Africa, Asia and northern Canada? Looks like the Sreelathans may be claiming these unfortunates as operating losses in their next tax return…
Lexi the hisser survived the battle and is able to send her telepathic victory announcement to Slinky and Narvu inside the Global Hyperspace Array comm-bunker deep beneath Black Mountain in central Utah. Narvu has modified the array to communicate with the nearest Continuum Alliance hyperspace transponder about 15ly distant. The special agent sends the historic message formally notifying the Continuum of the discovery of a new proto-stellar species. Within 3 years a Continuum monitoring fleet will arrive to verify the launch of a populated interstellar vehicle and prevent further interference by the Sreelathans, who after all were ‘only in it for the money’. No hard feelings…right?
The original Eagle Clan recon team abducted by aliens 2 years ago are finally rescued after water is drained and atmosphere restored to the Exoplanetary operations deck. They definitely have some catching up to do. 1,695 original colonists and crew still survive out of the original complement of 10,520. The rest were casualties of alien experiments or even more unsavory activities across the 26th and 28th centuries. Over 2,000 28th century Terrans were placed into hyper-sleep aboard the Daedalus during the recent Sreelathan purge of earth enclaves. These include mutants and artificial life of various sorts (androids, borgs, clones). How will they adjust to their new life as interstellar colonists? Star Mother has no intention of waking them any time soon, as many are probably dangerous or hostile and might have problems adjusting. Star Mother may need to wean them from their old murderous habits using her holo-deck dream world.
The Terran conquerors are now stranded aboard their newly won prize. No shuttles or alien space craft are found aboard. The only way home is via one of the 30-40 remaining functional 10-person escape pods. Even now a group of deluded ‘Advancer’ tribesmen hurtles toward earth in just such a pod. Star Mother cannot predict or track where the escape pods will end up after being launched so far from earth, only that the pods do in fact return to earth and should make the trip in 5 days. Each pod contains ample survival supplies including a large expandable motorized dinghy in the case of a water landing, which was considered 95% likely when in orbit around the water-world Epsilon Eridani IV.
The ‘Lost Tribes’ aboard the Daedalus will take some time to absorb the new realities, perhaps years. The Kruzomen are the most accommodating and begin setting up commercial enterprises almost immediately, to the continued exasperation of Star Mother. The Kruzomen seem the most well-adjusted of the three ex-colonist Lost Tribes. The few surviving Star Children disappear back into the bowels of the vast star-ship. Do they pose a danger to the Daedalus or threat to the mission to EE-IV? Can they ever be brought back into the fold of civilization? 60% of the brave ‘Advancers’ died in the battle to free the Daedalus. Those that survive number approximately 90 and loudly demand to return to Eden via the escape pods. They are all heavily armed with captured alien weaponry that no one knows how to disable. Star Mother has regained control of all the pods and denies them access until some final disposition can be made.
In any event the escape pods are a one-way trip, so everyone is faced with the decision of whether to accompany the Daedalus on the 1.8 year journey to Epsilon Eridani (10 years 9 months earth time), or return to earth and help rebuild from the ashes. Until the Daedalus actually reaches EE-IV and Terrans set foot on the alien surface, Earth will not have provisional membership in the Continuum and no direct help is possible. So it’s going to be a long decade without any assistance. What hi-jinks might other less friendly aliens engage in during this period? Will the monitors arrive in time, and just how effective will they be? Humanity has survival gripped by the fingernails, but will need to be on their toes during the coming ten years and probably beyond.
- Sleestak, Grey, Bannstone, Gooptaz and Grek choose to remain aboard the Daedalus and journey to the stars.
- Gooptaz opens the ‘Little Green Gourmet’ alien-themed cantina aboard the Daedalus. After all, who wants to sleep through the epic 1.88 year voyage upon which the fortune of humanity rides? The crew will need food and entertainment and ‘space food’ does get old. Goop’s new occupation may prove to be an eventful retirement if his competition has anything to say about it…he’ll be rubbing shoulders with the savvy Kruzomen.
- Strelok decides to return to earth and continue his association with the ‘Interworld Effectuator’ Narvu Pellinath in the hopes of becoming a Continuum intelligence operative.
- Titus Andronicus, the 25th century android and original ‘Daedalus Program Astrogator’, naturally chooses to take his place with the new and wacky crew of the not-so-new-and-improved 28th century Daedalus.
- Lexi returns to Utah to continue her role as long-distance telephathic ambassador to the New Utah Federation.
- Sudomo Salim is never found. Perhaps the aliens couldn’t resist one last abduction and spirited the unfortunate colonist away when they abandoned the Daedalus?
